The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer - Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena conducts applied research in the field of photonics and develops innovative optical systems to control light - from its generation and manipulation to its application. The services offered by the institute cover the entire photonic process chain ranging from opto-mechanical and opto-electronical system design to the manufacturing of customer-specific solutions and prototypes.

For the department »Opto-mechatronic Components and Systems« we are looking for highly motivated research students at our location in Erfurt. With us, you can gain practical experience as a student assistant or intern or write your thesis.

Our goal is to develop automated technologies for the hybrid integration of different components with the highest precision for the assembly of complex opto-mechanical and opto-mechatronic micro and macro systems. This includes assembly technologies such as handling, adjusting and joining (gluing, laser soldering, bonding, laser splicing) with the aid of high-precision and complex assembly machines.

Research in the department focuses on integration, assembly techniques and packaging for use, for example, in opto-electronic systems for quantum technologies, bio-analytics or life science applications. You can find out more about the department's research projects at Opto-mechatronical components and systems - Fraunhofer IOF.

What you will do

• Integration of complex systems for the fields of optics and photonics and for various applications
• Operation and programming of complex and high-precision assembly machines
• Hands-on experimental work on the packaging of small opto-electronic components
• Application of fiber-chip connection technologies in various projects
• Compact opto-electronics for quantum technologies and bio-analytics

What you bring to the table

• Degree with excellent grades in physics, mechanical engineering, photonics or materials science
• Interest in optics, mechatronics and electronics
• Interest in innovative problem solving and development projects
• Independent, conscientious and results-oriented way of working
• Good written and spoken German and English
• Willingness to work on research projects in the field of optics and precision mechanics for at least 3 months

What you can expect

• Collaboration in challenging research and development projects
• A collegial, open-minded and friendly team
• Interesting and innovative projects
• Flexible working hours to combine study and practice
• Comprehensive professional support from scientific mentors

To increase the chances of your unsolicited application, we ask you to submit complete documents. Please upload a letter of motivation, CV, references and details of your earliest possible start date and preferred type of employment.
